One of the things we did in preparation for the beginning of the school year was to re-arrange Lauren’s room a bit to accommodate a desk like the one we put in Will’s room last winter. Although she will not have homework this year in Kindergarten, it seemed a fitting way to mark such a milestone for her. And she really loves it. I must say I do too. Because she is a very prolific creator (as kids are wont to be), having a dedicated place for her own things has been a big plus for her (no masterpieces lost around the house) and for me (fewer teeny tiny pieces of cut paper and mini portraits to wrangle).
When we remodeled our home 4 years ago we ended up with tons of windows upstairs and a brilliant design (thanks to our wonderful architects!) where the bank of windows wraps around each of the four corners of the home with one narrow window. I have always loved this detail but appreciate it even more now that I see what a perfect spot it has provided for the kid’s desks to live. The natural light is spectacular. You can see how this looks in the bottom two photos.
When they were younger, the kids and I all enjoyed having a lot of this creative work take place in our eat-in kitchen. And while it still does, it’s also really wonderful to see them quietly working in a space where they can feel more ownership and find a bit of quiet and privacy.
It’s also nice to see them sharing that personal space.
